WORK IN MERKEZ ALL YEAR ROUND
Van, the largest city in the east of Turkey is largely ignored by most, except perhaps for those on the overland route to Iran. The modern city has a large student population and as a result has a rather liberal feel compared to most border cities. As a result teachers of foreign languages are often needed in various institutions be they in private language schools or official institutions. There also many small scale opportunities for volunteer positions in various charity projects intend on addressing the impact of the devastating earthquake of 2011 and working towards the improvement of education programmes in the region. Various charities and NGO's are in the local area operating and often require volunteers to aid them in their work.

ATTITUDE TO FOREIGNERS WORKING IN MERKEZ
Attitudes to foreigners are generally very positive. Locals may feel a little confused why foreigners would settle in the region, but don't mistake this for inhospitality. It may be worth noting that as this is a Kurdish area of Turkey with many people supporting various Kurdish issues you should perhaps look into the conflict. It is a very safe city where you can walk freely and safely at night. People are friendly and try to help you as much as possible even if there is a language barrier. Anybody staying in the area for a longer time will no doubt receive countless invites for dinner, to Kurdish wedding ceremonies and visits to villages in the province.
