The Indian education system is highly fragmented delivering different standards of education to India’s youth. High fee-paying schools are among the elite educational institutions while low fee-paying schools and government schools sit resignedly at the bottom. Low attendance and high drop-out rates are common and when an extra set of hands is needed in the home or to work, children may be taken out of school. Girls are most affected by this and struggling families will choose to educate a son rather than a daughter when faced with the choice. Volunteers meet with children in their home and teach one-to-one or perhaps two-to-one (where there are siblings of a similar age). Help the children acquire new knowledge, develop their confidence and show them that learning is fun and valuable to their future. Build rapport with students and tailor a learning program suited to their needs. Perhaps you will provide English language tuition along with some math, or bring along a lap top tMore...o introduce the children to computers for the first time. Hold lessons indoors or out and take arts materials for a fun and creative Friday lesson!
