Jim McLean Decorators, Taping (Drywall) & Office Manager
(March 2005 – January 2016)

I started my apprenticeship with Jim McLean Decorators in 2005 as an Ames Taper. I was responsible for taping/skimming the drywall joints after the drywall boards were fitted and partitions were built. I worked in various property developments throughout Scotland and quickly realised how important leaving a quality finish would be. Over the years i found my own routine and the most efficient way of getting the job done. Cleanliness was essential, leaving the house you worked in the exact way it was you found it.
After 7 years an opportunity arose within the company to be Office Manager. I was responsible for ordering in materials on all our building sites for the Painters, Tapers, and Joiners. An average week I’d make 20 orders, ordering specific materials to be delivered to each of the jobs our employees were working on throughout Scotland. Timing was of the utmost importance. If an order was late, our employees would be unable to work as they did not have the necessary materials required. I would also closely monitor the employees, calling each worker daily, to make sure they were on target with each house they worked in. Other tasks included renewing company insurance, fleet (vans) insurance, advertising, private jobs, taking customer calls and booking in free quotes/estimates, and compiling a weekly sheet for the ant to make sure each employee was paid exactly what they were owed.

I worked 11pm-4am 3 nights a week cleaning 6 communal toilets spread between 3 floors, followed by the outside smoking area then finally the kitchen.
