I believe that the main focus when working with any minority is to emphasize the importance of the empowerment and resilience both at the personal and community levels and it is of utmost importance to bring the academic knowledge to the community and vice-versa, otherwise, the theory turns out to be sterile.

Internship Supervisor in Community Psychology My students conducted discussion groups focusing on primary prevention in HIV/ AIDS in low-income slums ( “ favelas”) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, always focusing men who have sex with men from16 to 24 years old. After 6 months of theoretical training they were allowed to have clientes under my supervision.

1. Gay Parenting and social stigma in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a research conducted during my Master ́ s, with Terezinha Feres- Carneiro as principal investigator( 2005-2007), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. PUC-Rio.
2. “Conta-me/Cuentame" the first study of Spanish and Portuguese speaking gay and bisexual men in Canada, intended to understand HIV/AIDS risk. The project completed a survey and 45 interviews and currently undergoing analysis, Principal investigator Dr. Barry Adam (OTHN/University of Windsor), 2009-2013.
3.“REACH”: Alberta Working Group (RAWG) is a regional collaborative initiated in November 2014 by Floyd Visser and Brent Oliver as part of a CIHR Centre for REACH funded by Universities Without Walls fellowship. The collaborative was established in the hopes of more effectively linking HIV/AIDS research efforts in Alberta to the CIHR Centre for REACH and other community-based research (CBR) work that is happening in other regions of Canada".
